Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DEXA/DXA) provides an accurate, in-depth body composition analysis of your fat, muscle, bone, tissue and water mass. Body fat distribution is segmented by region (arms, legs, android, gynoid) and type (visceral, white/brown). This test can help to better identify health risks, chart change over time and pinpoint problems in the body before they occur.

What People Are Saying
Learn More
+ Who can benefit from a DEXA scan?
This test is useful for anyone who wants to learn about their body fat percentages, lean muscle mass and overall bone mineral density.
+ What will a DEXA body composition test tell me?
The test provides data on total body fat percentage, total fat mass and fat-free mass, regional body fat results (trunk, arms, legs, pelvis and android/gynoid regions), along with bone density. Learn more about the benefits of body composition testing here.
+ How does it work?
The DEXA Scan is quick and painless. You will be asked to lie down on an open, flat x-ray table. You will remain still as a scanning arm passes over your body. There are no special preparations required and you will be able to remain fully clothed. (See: What should I wear?)
+ What’s the difference between DEXA and BOD POD?
There are benefits to both assessments. Learn more here.
+ Can DEXA measure visceral fat?
Yes, the DEXA scan can measure the visceral fat content in the android (waist) region. Abdominal, or visceral, fat is of particular concern because it's a key player in a variety of health problems — much more so than subcutaneous fat, the kind you can grasp with your hand. Unlike subcutaneous fat, visceral fat lies out of reach, deep within the abdominal cavity, where it pads the spaces between our abdominal organs.
+ Does DEXA show me my bone density?
Yes, a DEXA scan will provide you with an overall measurement of your non-segmented bone mineral density.
+ Are there any limitations to who can get a DEXA test?
Yes. Anyone who is pregnant, or may be pregnant, should not undergo a DEXA scan. Some machines also have height and weight thresholds, so please check with your location prior to scheduling if you are over 6 feet tall or 300lbs.
+ I hear there is radiation involved. Should I be concerned?
No. The amount of radiation exposure from one DEXA scan is the equivalent to the amount of radiation exposure from a NYC to Los Angeles flight.
+ How long does it take?
You will be booked for a 45-minute time slot. The actual scan takes around ten minutes.
+ What should I wear?
Arrive metal/hard plastic free or ready to change. This includes: No zippers, buttons, reflective materials, jewelry or watches, and no bras with clasps or underwire. No metal or hard plastic hair clips or pins. If you have metal in your body (such as a replaced joint or a pin in a bone) please inform us.
+ Do I need to fast before the test?
On the day of the test you may eat normally.
+ How long until I have my results?
You will receive online access to your results within one business day.
