This is a quick, non-invasive test that is completed through a CT scan.

Results:
The Calcium Score is expressed as a number (0-400+).
A higher score indicates more plaque in the arteries.
The score is interpreted based on factors such as age, gender, and other risk factors for heart disease.
Interpretation:
A score of 0-10 indicates a low risk of heart disease.
A score of 11-100 indicates a moderate risk.
A score of over 100 indicates a high risk of heart disease.
The interpretation will vary by age. A higher score is more likely to be found in an older adult. As a result, the age-matched percentile will help you better understand where you stand given your current age.
Benefits:
The Calcium Score test can help identify individuals at risk for heart disease early in the disease process.
It can guide treatment decisions, such as lifestyle changes, medications, or surgery.
Limitations:
The Calcium Score test does not detect all types of plaque.
A high score does not always mean that a person will develop heart disease.

Yes. The great news is that the Fitnescity platform can help facilitate these orders, along with physician oversight, for you. Fitnescity works with a national network of third-party, board-certified physicians to coordinate the process remotely when you purchase a scan. Once you finalize scheduling for your Calcium Score appointment, your information will be sent to Fitnescity’s independent network of referring doctors. This allows you to obtain an order without taking time off work to do so or paying fees to visit your doctor. The physician will also review your results and be available for a follow-up call.
A hospital gown will be provided to wear during the test.
Electrodes will be placed on your chest to monitor your heart rhythm, and you will be asked to lie down on the CT scanner bed.
The test administrator will ask you to hold your breath for a few seconds at a time.
The scan will last approximately 10-15 minutes, while the appointment will last around 30 minutes.
Do not wear any items with metal or hard plastic, such as buttons, zippers, jewelry, watches, hair clips, bras with metal clasps or underwires.
Fasting is not required; however, you must refrain from consuming caffeine for at least 4 hours before testing. You should also avoid engaging in strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours before your Calcium Score test.
Please note that Calcium Score tests do subject you to radiation. A Calcium Score test emits slightly more radiation than a few X-rays but significantly less than a full CT scan. See below for more detailed information.
Due to the radiation described above, if you are or believe you may be pregnant, you will not be able to complete the Calcium Score test.
One of the common concerns people may have about Calcium Score tests is radiation. A Coronary Artery Calcium (CAC) scan has a low to moderate radiation level. It emits a slightly higher amount of radiation than a few X-rays, but significantly less than a full CT scan. The typical radiation dose is around 1 to 3 millisieverts (mSv). For context, natural background radiation from just living on Earth is about 3 mSv per year. For most people, the benefits outweigh the small risks, especially considering the impact of a cardiovascular event on overall health and longevity.
Although the Calcium Score test is painless and noninvasive, it is not suitable for everyone. Pregnant women and people who are unable to stay still for 10 to 15 minutes are not advised to complete the test.
Interpreting Calcium Score test results is easier than you think. When you do a Calcium Score test with Fitnescity, you get access to your dashboard. There, you can see your results and what the values represent. Your dashboard also shows how you compare to other people of the same age or gender.
Fitnescity also provides the option to speak one-on-one with a physician, should you have any questions about your results or how to use them.
While the price may vary, Calcium Score tests typically cost $200-$ 280 per test, depending on whether you purchase a package or a single test. Outside of New York, NY (E. 84th St.), prices vary by geography and provider.
Calcium Score tests are generally not covered by insurance. You can, however, use your FSA/HSA plan to cover payment for the test.
