Calcium Score Test in NYC

The calcium score test, also known as a coronary artery calcium (CAC) scan, measures the amount of calcium deposits in the coronary arteries. These deposits, known as plaque, can indicate an increased risk of heart disease.

Procedure:

  • The test is non-invasive and involves a low-dose CT scan of the heart.

  • You will lie on a table and a scanner will take multiple images of your coronary arteries.

  • The scan takes about 10 minutes.

Results:

  • The calcium score is expressed as a number (0-400+).

  • A higher score indicates more plaque in the arteries.

  • The score is interpreted based on factors such as age, gender, and other risk factors for heart disease.

Interpretation:

  • A score of 0-10 indicates a low risk of heart disease.

  • A score of 11-100 indicates a moderate risk.

  • A score of over 100 indicates a high risk of heart disease.

Benefits:

  • The calcium score test can help identify individuals at risk for heart disease early on.

  • It can guide treatment decisions, such as lifestyle changes, medications, or surgery.

Limitations:

  • The calcium score test does not detect all types of plaque.

  • A high score does not always mean that a person will develop heart disease.

Recommendation:

Discuss with your doctor if a calcium score test is appropriate for you based on your age, risk factors, and symptoms.
