WHAT IS A CALCIUM SCORE TEST?

Purpose: The Calcium Score Test, also known as a coronary artery calcium (CAC) scan, measures the amount of calcium deposits in the coronary arteries. It is a quick, non-invasive test with a CT scanner

Why is this important: A Calcium Score Test can help identify individuals at risk for heart disease early on and provide helpful insight into you heart health. You score can guide treatment decisions, such as lifestyle changes, medications, or surgery. It’s important to note that the calcium score test does not detect all types of plaque and a high score does not always mean that a person will develop heart disease.

Here are a few reasons you might want to complete a DEXA Scan in Calcium Score Test:

  • You have a family history of cardiovascular disease

  • You have been told you have high cholesterol or hypertension

  • You have diabetes

  • Your BMI over 25

  • You live a sedentary lifestyle

  • You are currently or have been a smoker.

IS THE TEST ACCURATE?

Yes, the Calcium Score test is a specialized, non-invasive CT (computed tomography) scan used to detect calcium deposits in the coronary arteries — the vessels that supply blood to your heart.

HOW DOES THE RMR TEST WORK?

Description: The duration of the test is about 15 minutes. During the test you will provided a hospital gown to wear. You will be lying supine on a table that slides into the CT scanner. Electrodes are placed on your chest to monitor your heart's electrical activity (EKG). This helps time the CT images with your heartbeat. You must remain still and will be asked to hold your breath briefly, for a few seconds at a time.

You’ll be pleased to know that the Calcium Score test is safe. This type of scan uses a significantly lower level of radiation than standard X-rays. In fact, this noninvasive scan involves minimum radiation, which is comparable to flying from New York City to Los Angeles.

Although Calcium Score test is painless, noninvasive, and generally safe, it’s not suitable for everyone. People under the age of 40 years shouldn’t get a Calcium Score test. The test isn’t suitable for pregnant women and people who are unable to stay still for 10 to 15 minutes.

Your Responsibilities: The results of the test may be inaccurate if pre-test procedures are not properly followed. You should immediately report any unusual feelings that are of concern to the test staff during the test.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE TEST?

Prior to your Calcium Score test, there are a few important things to note:

  • You must not consume nicotine or caffeine 4 hours prior to the test.

  • You must avoid moderate and vigorous exercise at least 4 hours prior to the test.

  • Your commute to the hospital should be relatively stress free, so plan extra time! Avoid brisk walking, running or taking a lot of stairs.

  • Failure to meet these standards may result in an inaccurate result.

  • Attire for the test: You will be provided a hospital gown to wear during testing. You should not wear any jewelry or underwire bras.
